POKOTABI / Shibaen
芝苑(しえん)
Tucked away in Komagome, Toshima Ward, Shibaen is a welcoming yakiniku spot run by a husband and wife, serving thick-cut jo-karubi, salted beef tongue, and mixed offal with counter seating suitable for solo dining.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked into a side street off the main thoroughfares of Komagome, Toshima Ward, Shibaen hangs out its noren curtains with an easygoing, welcoming atmosphere courtesy of the couple who run it. The savory scent of meat searing slowly on tabletop griddles drifts through the dining room, setting the tone for an unhurried, comfortable meal.
The menu ranges from staples like salted beef tongue and prime short ribs (jo-karubi) to seasoned offal and a 3-variety offal assortment, each cut thick enough to showcase its inherent flavor. Tender, well-marbled karubi is wonderful scooped over rice, but it works just as well alongside a draft beer, Hoppy, or makgeolli. Hearty soups such as egg soup and gukbap, as well as light sides like seasoned cold tofu, round out the offerings between grilled bites and provide a satisfying close to the meal.
Alongside table seating, counter seats make the restaurant an easy choice for solo diners looking for an unhurried plate of grilled meat, as well as small groups dining together. Open from 17:00 to 23:00 and closed on Wednesdays, the shop accepts reservations and PayPay payments. With limited seating available, securing a table in advance is a good idea on evenings when you want to settle in for a proper meal.
